“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul
prospers.”
3
John 1:2
The soul that has a steady
diet of the Word of God and does what it says is prosperous. God causes it to prosper. God desires that we
prosper in every way as our soul is prospering in Him. Joshua 1:8 says, "Do not let this book
of the law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and successful." He wants us to prosper both spiritually and
physically. If the financial state of some were as bad as the spiritual state, they would be bankrupt.
If some were as strong spiritually as physically, they would be bedridden. There is some benefit in physical well
being, but spiritual well being is much more beneficial. 1 Tim. 4:8 says, "For physical training is of some value,
but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
A prosperous soul is a soul that is in constant
fellowship with the Lord. The food for the soul, is the Word of God which strengthens our spirits. In John 6:32,
Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives
you the true bread from heaven." In John 6:33, Jesus refers to Himself as our bread. "For the bread
of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." In John 6:48-51 Jesus explains, " I
am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here
is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that
came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of
the world.”
In
order to prosper, we must live on every Word from His mouth, for He is life. Jesus taught in John 6:53-58, "Very
truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever
eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh
is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I
in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me
will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but
whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” John's hope when he wrote 3 John 1:2, was that Gaius'
(who he was writing to) physical well being was as good as his spiritual well being. We must live on a steady diet of
God's Word to keep our spirits strong. We must pray and do what He says and abide in Him. Proverbs 22:4 promises,
"Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life."
