Word For the Day March 31
By: Pastor John Hammack
"Jesus
soon saw a great crowd of people climbing the hill, looking for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, "Philip, where
can we buy bread to feed all these people?"" John 6:5.
In John
chapter 6, Jesus saw a great crowd coming toward him and asked Philip where should they buy bread for all the people
to eat. Philip answered, "Eight months wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" (John
6:7) After, Andrew told Jesus there was a boy with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus took this and gave
thanks and distributed it, enough for 5,000 men plus women and children.
Jesus already knew what He
was going to do when He asked Philip where should they buy bred for the people. He asked Philip to test him. Philip's
answer was certainly not the right one. Philip was looking in the natural, and leaned on his own understanding.
I can imagine Philip was overwhelmed by this question. After all there was five thousand men, not counting women
and children. Even after the miracles Philip saw Jesus perform, it didn't occur to him that He could feed
the people. Philip's answer should have been, "Lord we know that through you all things are possible and whatever
you ask God will give it to you."
How many times have we looked at circumstances or situations and
thought the way Philip thought. It is very overwhelming, stressful, and seemingly impossible when we lean on our own
understanding and do not trust the Lord to move our mountains. God wants us to trust Him and have faith without
doubting (Mathew 21:21). We have to know that, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me"
(Philippians 4:13), and that God is able to do the impossible.
With man it is impossible, but not with God:
for with God all things are possible. (Mark 10:27)
